MRI Glossary of Terms

A glossary of common MRI terms includes definitions for T1-weighted and T2-weighted imaging (which enhance different tissues), k-space (where raw data is collected), and inversion time (the time between pulses). Other terms describe the anatomy (like spondylolisthesis) or pathology (like disc desiccation or syrinx) visible in the scans. Understanding these terms can help interpret an MRI report.

MRI Scan and Image Terminology

Contrast: The difference in signal intensity between two adjacent regions, used to distinguish tissues in an image.
Dephasing: The process where magnetic dipoles lose phase coherence, leading to a loss of signal.
Inversion Pulse: A 180-degree radiofrequency (RF) pulse used before an excitation pulse to control image contrast.
Inversion Time (TI): The time elapsed between an inversion pulse and an excitation pulse.
k-space: A digital map where raw MR data is collected before being converted into an image via a Fourier transform.
T1-weighted MRI: An MRI sequence that enhances the signal from fatty tissue and suppresses water.
T2-weighted MRI: An MRI sequence that enhances the signal from water.
